Chapter 5, using bar modeling for addition and subtraction, was taught by grade 2 this year for the first time. It has not been taught in the past. The chapter was difficult for grade 2 students across all three classes. I performed a reteach after the test was taken. This reteach opportunity offered 8 extra points on the test.
The second grade team lead and I have discussed revising how the material is taught next year, as students may not be developmentally prepared for the chapter in its entirety. We believe a better approach is to work on the components in conjunction with addition and subtraction throughout the year to better prepare students for their future with the Singapore model.
