Summer Practice Guide

Below is a topic guide for hands-on, real-world, grade two skill practice. Have fun; build, create, fail, try again, succeed!

Math:

Second graders are responsible for numbers up to 1,000!
Addition and subtraction up to 1,000

Fluently add and subtract within 20

Mental Math and estimating amounts

Count coins up to $5.00
Count money up to $50.00
Real-world word problems involving money

Tell time to the hour, half-hour and minute
Write times in word form
Using A.M. and P.M

Practice customary measurement:  inches, feet
Real-world measurement comparison and word problems

Metric measurement: centimeters, meters
Real-world measurement comparison and word problems

Multiplication tables 0-10, up to 100
Basic division

Reading and creating line plots and picture graphs




ELA:

Read 30 minutes a day- build stamina!

Use MobyMax and Spelling City

Learn homophones

Understand cause and effect in fiction and non-fiction

Read for speed!- practice minute drills

Read for meaning- practice identifying the main point of each page or paragraph, then write about it

Practice contractions

Identify and use nouns, proper nouns, pronouns, verbs and adjectives

Distinguish fact and opinion

Using commas, quotation marks, capital letters

Write essays with beginning, middle and end

Write narratives, research papers and persuasive essays

Retell books and stories using time-order words; verbally and in writing
